I had the opportunity to sit down with Hanah and ask her some questions about wedding hair and makeup to help brides get answers to some questions that you might have when doing research on hair and makeup artists for your big day. It’s important to book with someone that is going to make you feel gorgeous on your wedding day!
When did you get started in the wedding industry?
“Technically in 2021, with one wedding at Nazareth Hall! It was the first time I had the opportunity to do a wedding and I left thinking how I wanted to do hair and makeup full time.”
Are you self taught or did you always want to pursue being a wedding makeup artist?
“I am self taught and yes I always wanted to be a bridal hair and makeup artist. Bridal encompasses everything I love about hair and makeup, I don’t love cuts and colors, I just love pretty makeup.”
What are the pros of doing a trial for hair and makeup?
“The biggest thing is getting to know the bride. That’s what I take away most. Not only do I get to practice your hair and makeup but I get to become friends with you. By the wedding day we feel like besties.
For the bride it’s getting to try the hair style they love on Pinterest. Sometimes the hair or makeup style they love on Pinterest or they see on someone else, doesn’t look the same on them, so we can tweak it and change things until the brides are in love with it. Everyone should do a trial!”
What is your favorite part of the wedding morning?
“The bride’s hair and makeup reveal and getting to be there on their very special morning is a huge honor.”
How much time should brides set aside for hair and makeup?
“I would say three hours total, do I get three hours total? No haha!
Honestly it varies based on each person and what hair and makeup look they want. Some people I can get done in an hour and a half and others three hours. It all depends! But I’d say at least two hours.”
Do you put together a timeline for everyone getting their hair and makeup done?
“I don’t and I have a good reason for why I don’t. Every time a specific timeline with individuals listed is given to me. 100% of the time, it never goes to plan. I’ve had brides who are dead set on a time and I explain to them why it’s not going to work out and it doesn’t work out, due to human error. It’s hard to get 6-10 people to do what you need them to do at once. The only person that really matters in a timeframe is the bride and potentially the maid/ matron of honor and moms.”
What is your best piece of advice for someone looking for a wedding HMUA?
“Making sure your styles mesh up is the most obvious thing to look for. But things brides don’t always think to look for are good communication, are they answering your emails in a timely manner. Punctuality, are they showing up to your trail on time and you can count on them to be there on your wedding day on time and not late. Overall personality, can you sit and talk with this person for over two hours while you get your hair and makeup done? I think these are what brides should be looking for while not only looking for their HMUA but all vendors!”
Do you do airbrush?
“No, I don’t do it because in my opinion it’s not a universal product. It won’t work the same for everyone’s skin type. With my technique I do a traditional application and push the product into the skin rather than it sitting on the surface. It’s an outdated technique.”
What makes you a luxury bridal hair and makeup artist?
“The process and professional products. All products are from Sephora and Ulta and name brands that work on each individual person. And my style. I focus on modern, classic styles. With my process you get pampered before your makeup application and after I give brides a touchup kit!”
Do you have to book hair and makeup to book with you?
“Nope, one or the other is fine with me!”
Go to drink and snack/ meal before, during or after a wedding?
“A McDonald’s Diet Coke and Double Cheeseburger after a wedding every time!”
Do you have anything exciting coming up in the future?
“Yes, there are some things in the works! My business partner and I are working on a project that we hope to launch early 2025 and we are very excited about it! So stay tuned!!”
